@ the Trial

So you want to play agility!?!

Welcome to the best sport around.  You get to run and play with your dog while making life long friends and, if you choose, get to travel to small towns in the middle of nowhere that have a horse barn you would never have known about otherwise.  This is the glamorous world of Dog Agility.

When I tell others why I'm in town, they immediately go to the movie "Best in Show".  My standard response is agility is the rodeo to the prancing horse show.

Most agility trials are held in an open space.  The ring requires 90x90 or 100x100.  This space can be a converted warehouse, horse barn, soccer field, or outside in a park.  The surface needs to be safe for both dogs and handlers.  The picture above shows Daphne jumping 16 at a trial held outside on grass.  A good grassy field is by far the best; until it rains, snows or has so much dew that everyone is slipping.  There is no perfect surface, only comfortable and safe.

Things to do to play agility -

Confirm with your vet your dog is sound and healthy enough to play.

Locate a local club and go observe.

Attend a local trail and get to know some of the people - DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG.

While at the trail, ask to assist.  Getting involved early is the best.

Find a teacher that has or does compete - they understand the sport.

Do not get talked into competing until you and your dog are confident to compete.  All will be happier.

Enter only a few runs at your first trial - don't over do it.  Failing will happen but if you and your dog get frustrated then no one wins.

Invest in a secure crate for both the trial and the car.  Have equipment that is only used at the trial.  Your dog will make the connection.

Carry enough water, food and treats from home for your dog.  They should be more comfortable then you.

Last - HAVE FUN!
